An Open Letter To Parents On How To Prevent Unwanted Pregnancies Amongst Our Teenagers

Dear Parent(s), it has been a societal far cry on the early exposure of our female children to the hurdles of life, via early (adolescent/teenage) pregnancy. Every parent's pride is to nurture relevant children who are better replicas of the norms and values of the home, but that most of the time isn't the status quo.

In a report released by WHO on adolescent pregnancy amongst developing countries for the year 2020, showed that over 777,000 girls under the age of 15 give birth each year, and those between the ages of 15-19 years old have over 10 million unwanted pregnancies yearly, and deaths which are pregnancy-related has been the leading cause of the demise of many female adolescents in these regions.

It's quite painful to know that this cancerous growth which has cut short the potentials of our tomorrow's leaders, has been left unchecked.

Pregnancy, comes with a lot of challenges for every mature female let alone a child/teenager still being nurtured, having the responsibility of nurturing another.

It's highly risky for these children to have a pregnancy at such a tender age. Many who have died may have been a result of pregnancy complications such as eclampsia, puerperal endometritis, and systemic infections. Some as a result of unhealthy pregnancy termination and sometimes as a result of childbirth.

Children born from adolescent/teenage pregnancy tend to have a low birth weight, and in some cases, further complications may arise for both mother and child.

We are saddled with the responsibility of properly nurturing our heritages - the females of our society because the performances of society are largely dependent on their teachings and on how well they fare as mothers.

I intend to recommend these measures as they have been properly utilized with proven results amongst our western counterparts.

The role of education in a child can't be downplayed at any given time. Education shapes both the spirit, mind, and body of our children - whether it is on entrepreneurship, home management, or sexual orientation.

Our kids tend to have early exposure to adulthood via the Internet and Television Networks, making them having prior knowledge of sexual intimacy in an unreliable, and deceptive way. The best bet is to enlighten them first hand on the danger such early adventures may incur.

Talking to your children constantly helps build trust and a stronger parent/child relationship. That way they get to confide in you on their current concern.

Next, have a stand on the kind and age grades of friends they should have. Always discourage early dating. It exposes girls to stuff they are not prepared for. Also, girls tend to date guys who are way older than they are, and that most of the time, is the cause of intimate adventures.

In situations where the rules are broken, always be willing to discipline them as at when necessary. Sparing her for her wrongful deeds is unintentionally spoiling her. However, in your firmness be warm. And always ensure to regulate the things they watch on TV and the Internet.

With these above measures as a parent, you can rest assured that your girl(s) are being properly nurtured. Kindly tell us what other better ways you have utilized to combat this issue.
