NASS Will Not Pass Any Law Against Press Freedom - Lawan

As this year’s World Press Freedom Day is celebrated globally today, May 3, the National Assembly, has vowed that it would never pass any law that inhibits the freedom of the press in Nigeria.

The Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, who gave the assurance in a message of felicitation with Nigerian journalists as they joined their colleagues across the world to celebrate the event, however, urged the practitioners to purge themselves of bad eggs.

Lawan noted that May 3 is set aside every year to remind governments around the world of their obligation to facilitate and respect press freedom, and also to remind journalists the need to respect the ethics of their profession.

The Senate President, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Ola Awoniyi, stated that he was proud that Nigeria has a vibrant media that have always resolutely defended freedom of speech.

Gombe Discovers 668 Ghost Workers

The sum of N37m has been saved by Gombe State Government after running its newly introduced biometric capture of all civil servants in the state during the payment of salaries for the month of April, 2021, just as 668 ghost workers have been discovered.

The saved amount according to the state government included that of two Local Government Areas of Akko and Gombe from the eleven LGAs in the State where the biometric capture was also run assuring that the biometric capture will be a continuous exercise until the actual strength of the State Civil Servants is ascertain.

State Commissioner of Finance, Alhaji Gambo Magaji, made the disclosure during a press briefing organized in conjunction with the office of the Head of Civil Service, Alhaji Bappayo Yahaya, who is also the Chairman of the Committee saying that no fewer than 668 staff who could also be described as ghost workers were affected.

Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi was the former Governor of Rivers State and a Chieftain in All Progressive Congress (APC).

Recently, Ameachi has been caught on tape admitting that President Muhammadu Buhari has always ordered the CBN to keep printing money since 2015, Peoples Gazette can report.

Mr Buhari vowed to revamp the Nigerian economy in his campaign promises, but has been criticised for worsening the economic situation over the past six years of his regime.

In an interview with journalists prior to the 2019 general election in which Mr Buhari was re-elected, Mr Amaechi also disclosed that they swore an oath never to publicly admit to Nigerians that the government was on a printing spree of the national currency.

He said, “And most of you didn’t know at the time we took over, most Nigerians don’t even know because we have sworn to an oath not to tell anybody we were printing money,”

Buhari Approves Centre For Small Arrms Control

The Federal Executive council led by President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of a National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons.

Naija News reports that the development which was contained in a communique released by the presidency on Monday, May 3, confirmed the appointment of Retired Major General AM Dikko as the National Coordinator of the centre.

It was revealed in the statement that the centre would be domiciled in the Office of the National Security Adviser. The presidency explained that the decision is part of the ongoing restructuring of Nigeria’s security architecture to address emerging threats and strengthen the regional mechanism for the control, prevention and regulation of (SALW).
